first few days

hey hey!

ive arrived safely, and have been sort of camping in my own house as only the toilet was working when i arrived, so no shower, water, kitchen or furniture. fun!

Front yard

These are some pics of my room and how i lived in it for the first days:

entrance

corner (where my closet is now)

big window (looking out to trash :) )

bed

cool right :)

new books

"kitchen" area

most is fixed now, still no kitchen till the end of the week but being able to take a shower makes a huge difference.

so, after i arrived i found out i still wasnt enrolled in uni because they did not except the paper i sent them saying i graduated. luckily, my student advisor from Utrecht uni picked up her mobile and promised to help out. she sent a letter confirming my graduation and gpa, so now im officially enrolled and can get started monday. exciting!

then finally today the swell was enough to go for a surf! went alone, weather still bright and sunny making it an amazing first time back. the surf was small and sets were really far apart, but to be back in the sea and enjoy the amazing lines of gennith was just amazing in itself. i dont think ill ever enjoy the dutch surf again after this year.. ill try to put some pics of the lines online soon but my (really old) digital camera broke down and i think it cannot be brought back to life :(

so, life is good here, havin a blast, go everywhere on my longboard (great asphalt and even better hills) and i cant wait for uni to start!

love xxx

EDIT: cam was fixed by a shop here, so put my first skate pics on here (plus an update of the house). enjoy!

Packed up and ready to go..

Hi all,

Ive moved out of my lovely house in Utrecht yesterday, packed my car (it was crazy full, and stuff kept falling on me as i made turns..) and drove to my parents’ house where i stayed my last night in NL.

Now, i have repacked my car, with more stuff but better done so i can actually see through all my windows and use all my mirrors (which is handy when your driving such a distance, and half of it on the wrong side of the road..).

Ill start driving tonight and hope to arrive in Swansea around midday saturday.

So im off, very stoked about it all and hope to be kept update on the latest gossip in NL!

Skype/MSN/Facebook/Hyves/call/text/email me or just leave a reply here ^^

Love,
Rosie

En lieve nederlandse vriendjes en vriendinnetjes: mijn NL nummer gaat zo snel mogelijk uit gebruik voor het komende jaar, laat t weten als ik een UK nummer heb. Smsen kan wel, zal m af en toe checken. Joo! X

Almost time to move again…

Hey everybody,

Just a quick update to let you know I’ve been accepted into Swansea University for a Masters in Development and Human Rights. Very exciting!!

I’ve found a house close to uni, with two other girls, Liz and Maartje. Never met them so very curious to do so in a few weeks!

Next week is my last week of work in Utrecht, then packing up my house so my subleaser Ruut can move in and then it starts… The long drive to Wales with my cute little car, which by then will be stuffed and carry all my shit plus 1 surfboard and 2 long(skate)boards.. Exciting!

Will keep you updated on my adventures there via this site, so enjoy!

finally :) discovering england/wales

Hellow then, finally an update!

I know its been ages, ive been really busy with everyting.

Fist, there was easter, big succes: 2,5 weeks of amazing snowboarding in the french alpes and lots of hard work as a rep and travel guide. NSSK (Dutch Student Snowboarding Championships were amazing!!! www.nssk.nl)

Then two weeks at home with my parents, hanging out with friends, hugging my horses (and all the other animals at the farm) and finally: buying a car and driving it back to Swansea!

Its an awesome car (thanks Erik Rutgers, Olst-Wijhe), especially with my surfboard on top: doesnt it just look adorable?! (pics will follow sooon)

After i got back to swansea, its been full on essay writing. Ive managed to finish all my four essays (total wordcount: 15000… ) and am now enjoying summer holidays! Because im an exchange student, i dont have any exams.

So: lots of surfing, lots of chillin and lots of exciting trips! Went to Wolverhampton this weekend for my yoga teacher training, it was nice, met lots of lovely people and saw some old friends again, Anouschka who i hadnt seen in 4 years… i slept at a nice b&b right across from where the weekend was held, v practical and v nice people. (Langford Farm House, Cannock) On Sunday night, i went to Anouschkax92s house, went out to a lush indian dinner and a mystical walk in the park and then slept at her house.

Today, i drove to north wales (near Bangor) to see more friends. The trip, driving into wales again from england, was stunning, i had to stop and take pictures all the time J

Had a lovely afternoon walk with Saraswati, taking pictures of the bluebells in the valley.

Went to visit Linzi and Christine in their amazing cottage nearby, absolutely lovely to see them and speak to them again after 4 years.

Im sleeping at the Lodge tonight, then driving back to swansea tomorrow, following the coastline down the west of wales, which is supposed to be gorgeous so pics will follow!

Hope to get lots of response messages!

Departure Chamrousse & Arrival Les Deux Alpes

After more than a week in Chamrousse with the NSSK i am now at Les Deux Alpes (L2A) at the Yeti. Yes they do have one of those here. Its all really different, Chamrousse was quiet and small and i knew everyone, while here its a really big village, with lots of bars and discotheques and shops, and i dont know anyone! I miss the NSSK people, my own (6pax) appartment, Snowtrex, Le Bachat with 5euro/hour internet and the K-dox!

I will be here for a week, then go back to either vizille or chamrousse and maybe go home a bit later than expected, i love the snow and would like to have a bit of time in it without having to work or worry about my group.

My dutch number (0031616531146) isnt working anymore, i think the sim broke or something, and my french number is back to its proper owner so ix92m stuck with my english number (00447964424048) which doesnt have any credit on it, so i cant receive calls either.

I bought a french sim card, that i will use for the summer surfing aswell. the number is:

0033616248264

so text me or give me a call! dont leave voicemail messeges cos i dont have much credit.

MoM; ix92m still alive and not broken (a bit bruised but thats what arnica is for right..) and nice and tanned (one half of my face is anyway, very charming)

Hope to see everyone soon in holland, miss you!

Exciting stories of snow

Since Thursday, I have been in the snow of Chamrousse, French Alpes. I went to London by train on Wednesday, and went for a discovery tour of all the shops: heaven! ; ) On the train, i spoke to my mom who booked me a flight to Grenoble for the next day.

(L) thanks mommy! (L)

I slept in piccadilly hostel (www.piccadillyhotel.net), which was nice apart from the extremely annoying roommate who kept talking to me and even did private things in the bed right next to me with me in the room!! :O *shock* Also, the kitchen was a big room with tables, chairs and microwaves. No sinks, no water boilers, no fridge, it was the worste ive ever seen in a hostel. Luckily i had some Hobnobs (best biscuits ever, ask J J) and Pringles left so i didnt die of hunger, but it wasnt very healthy.

Then, the next morning it was time for my flight. I checked in with easyjet (who apparently had an extremely annoying day cos they charged me for 2 kilos overweight: 12 pounds, and even another girl for 1 kilo overweight….) and took my flight to Grenoble. There, i waited in the sun (very nice and warm so sat outside in my top.. You gotta love france..) until Sofie, a belgium colleague came to pick me up. We drove to Vizille, where the central office of Sportura is in France. Its a gorgeous hotel (http://chateaudecornage.com/) where i received a warm welcome by the staff and stayed the night in a room that was heaven, well done Lotte and Jens!

The day after, Willem (my colleague for this week) and i drove off to Chamrousse to get organised. We met up there with two of organisers of the NSSK, the dutch student snowboarding championships (www.nssk.nl) and got started.

Up till now, its been really hard work, because lots of things need to be organised, but it also is a lot of fun, as a big group of people here at the NSSK are from my hometown boardsports club Spin (www.spin-utrecht.nl). Its really good to see them all again and get to know them better, altho it sometimes is difficult to be the Sportura travel guide to them, as they are also my friends. But I manage!

The weekend was really busy, as all the guests arrived, in total 167 in two groups: NSSK and ROC, a school thats on holiday here. On Monday, Willem left so i now i am all alone as a representative of Sportura.

Its fun to do the responsible part of the job, as normally im just a hospitality rep, with a travel guide above me to take all the blame and organise everything.

Yesterday, Monday, was the first day that was less chaotic, so i got up early and after doing the important things of the day went to go snowboarding for the first time here in Chamrousse. I got out of the lift at the same time as one of the advanced snowboarding lessons of Ripstar (www.ripstar.nl) by Evelien, and i could join in. It was really cool, she told us how to do better turns, do ollies and nollies and ride fakie or switch. I really enjoyed going on the lesson, it was educating and loads of fun. After that, i went to find the first official competition of the NSSK, the slalom. It took a while before we found it, and even had to take (my first) black piste, but it went really well, with turns and all, so i was really proud. The slalom was interesting, especially because there were 7 Spinners in the different categories (rookie, girls, men).

I had to go home quite quickly after, cos i still had some work to do. It had gone pretty misty already, so i took the piste down to the gondola, which took me right up to the highest peak to go down to my own part of town in one go. I was with some other Spinners, Do and Robert, and we tried to take an easy blue piste to go home safe and quickly. We couldnt really find the blue piste tho, and came to a sign that said that from there on, it was unpreparated (?) piste, and snowboarding was at your own risk. The guys decided to find the red piste that was supposed to be quite close to the right, and they took off into the off piste area. So did i, but as this is my third week of snowboarding, im not very good in powder snow thats 50 cm deep. I kept falling over and getting up was really difficult. Within minutes i could not hear or see the guys because of the thick fog that was all around. The vision was about 3 metres!!!

I decided to take of my board after a while, and try to walk thru the snow to the piste. This walking wasnt as easy as i had thought, because the powder was soo deep. It turned into crawling (tijgeren like Beyoncxe9 and her ladies in the video of Survivor) which was really exhausting. I hadnt eaten lunch, couldnt see, was alone and didnt know where to go so it was pretty scary, especially because it was in the uninsurred area, where i thought they would never find me if i couldnt go on. Instead of panicing tho, i decided to be a good travel guide and get myself to keep on going. Finally i came to a piste and sat down in proper hard snow. With no energy and hijgend als een paard (?translation?) i waited. After a while, a Hungarian skier came by and stopped. He didnt speak much english but understood that i needed some help. The only hungarian word i remembered was Kussunum (spelling?), which means thank you. He took me to the piste, which was hardly visible with the ever thickening fog. I kept falling over and getting off piste but he waited every time, and when he couldnt see me anymore he would yell to let me know where to go. He took me all the way down to the village (he was going the same way) and saved me. I really didnt think i could get down myself, my legs were (and are) killing me but he kept me going so that was great, hex92s officially the best guide in Chamrouse!

After i got of the piste, i didnt have time to think or scream or cry, cos i had to do my work, which i was already really late for. The local bar that i had to be in, the K-dox, gave me something to eat and was very kind, and after i had some friends to give me a big hug to de-stress, which was very very nice.

That night was the big x91kansloos fransoosx92 party of the NSSK, which was fun.

Today, i joined in with a freestyle clinic of Ripstar and learned about 180s, tail and nose rides, and more about ollies and nollies. It was really cool.

After that, i decided to sit in the restaurant and do paperwork, instead of going up the mountains again. That was a good decision because it became all foggy again right after i sat down. When i was done, i went to the outdoor swimming pool and the saunas that are underneath the restaurant to relax my extremely painfull muscles. Will go to bed early tonight, havent gotten much sleep lately but im havin a great time and enjoying myself bigtime!

Next week when Spin is going home, i will be going to Alpe dx92Huez or maybe Risoul if we can organise transport for another week in the snow. After that ix92ll be in Utrecht from Sunday the 30th till Tuesday the 1st of April, then go to the farm for a week and return to Utrecht on Monday. On Tuesday the 8th of April i fly back to London and take a train to Swansea.

There ix92ll have two crazy weeks of essay writing, and then almost summer holiday!

Hope evs ok with everyone at home, speak soon!

Xoxo

BUSA Newquay 2008

Long time no see/blog!

thursday the 28th of march i left with Rebekah and the surf club to Newquay, Cornwall, to have a full on weekend of surfing and partying!
the BUSA (british universities sports association, www.busa.org.uk) surfing championships are a big event for swansea uni, cos last year we came second!

this year, we had 2 guys teams competing and 1 girls team.

we arrived quite late at night at the Escape hostel (www.escape2newquay.co.uk) and tried to go to sleep early. That didnt really work out cos our (me and Beks) room was right above the hostels bar, and as the boss wasnt in, the music was REALLY loud..

the next morning i got up really early and walked down to the closest beach: Towan. gorgeous but almost no surf.. we wanted to go out for surf then, but since there wasnt a lot and the first heats of the competition that started had our guys in them so we went to see them surf at another beach: Fistrall, where the surf was a bit bigger.

later on i went out for a surf myself, first time with my own board so that was really cool. literally cool afterwards tho, no showers and a freezing wind, and smarty me forgot to bring my jacket to Newquay.

friday night was dinner at walkabout, an ozzie bar/restaurant, and going out afterwards. it was fun, but me and some of the girls went home early, as the girls next round was early the next morning and i wanted to go out for a surf in the morning.

saturday, the girls event was at Towan, they did good again. as this was our last night, we had our own pre-party at the hostel:

then we went to the big surf party at Koola, a club. lots of drinks and dancing, fun!

sunday was the final day and was really sunny! the girls did really well, hannah got thru to the finals and came forth.

i’m proud to say i went for a surf every day, tho it was cold it was def worth it! love my new board and the uk seas.
